St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church

Surface Type: Natural Stone

Proyect Type: Worship

Contractor: Skanska USA

Location: New York, NY

While we’ve been honored to be part of many projects over the years, this one was particularly special: St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and National Shrine in lower Manhattan, near the World Trade Center site.

SkudoBoard Fabric Back was used to protect tile flooring on the interior of the building under scissor lifts, carts, tools, foot traffic, and equipment while the final construction was nearing completion in 2022.

The original building was a row house that dated back to the 1830s and was purchased by Greek immigrants in 1916 to use as a place of worship. The structure was tragically destroyed on September 11, 2001, when the South Tower collapsed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.

Following years of delays, the church officially celebrated its reopening on July 4, 2022. The new building includes a non-denominational remembrance hall in honor of the first responders and victims who lost their lives on one of the darkest days in US history. The structure was also named one of  “the nine most anticipated architecture projects opening in 2022” by Galerie Magazine.
